NTS exams postponed for unspecified period.

AIOU has postponed the NTS test/exams for unspecified period for admission in M Phil leading to PhD, M Phil and PhD programmes for autumn semester 2009.

NTS Test was announced to be held on 25th October, 2009 (Sunday) at Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar, Multan, Lahore, Gujranwala and Islamabad. New date for the purpose shall be announced soon.

Army Brigadier and his driver shot dead in Islamabad

A Pakistan Army brigadier and his driver were shot dead while another soldier sustained injuries Thursday morning when two men opened fire at their jeep here.

It was the second attack in three days in Islamabad, where two suicide bombers blew themselves up in the International Islamic University Tuesday, killing seven people.

The attack by the armed men riding a motorcycle took place when the army jeep was passing through G-11 sector where senior army officials were staying. Eyewitnesses said the terrorists, aged between 22 to 25 years, managed to flee after carrying out the deadly ambush.

Sources said Brigadier Moin-u-Din and his driver Asghar were killed while his gunman sustained serious injuries when unknown armed men opened fire on their vehicle bearing no 6316 from three sides. According to sources the unidentified attackers were on foot and escaped in nearby alleys after shooting at a military vehicle in which driver and Brigadier were killed.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has issued directives to Islamabad police Chief for arrest of the culprits. The vehicle was riddled with bullets, its tyres punctured out and windscreen shattered. The commandoes of Pakistan army have cordoned off the area.

Some eyewitnesses saw an armed man fleeing towards the vegetable market. Police have launched search in the area with search dogs but no arrests have been made so far.

Heavy contingents of the police were deployed at the entry and exit points of the federal capital with security high alert in Islamabad. Brig. Moin-Dun was performing his duties in UN mission and he returned to Pakistan on leave to spend some days for his family.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident has commenced, sources said. It is pertinent to mention that G-11 Sector is the residential area of top army officials in Islamabad while pillion riding is also already banned in federal capital.

Farooq Haider New AJK ‘PM’

Raja Farooq Haider of the Muslim Conference has been elected as the new “prime minister” of Azad Kashmir Thursday.

Farooq secured 29 votes, while his party rival and acting “prime minister” Yaqoob Khan got 19 votes.

The AJK legislative assembly was presided by the speaker Ghulam Kadir.

New leader of the house was elected through secret balloting.

Twenty-nine members of the House gave votes to Raja Farooq out of total forty-eight House members. The opposing candidate Sardar Yaqoob Khan got nineteen votes.

Raja Farooq Haider would be the 9th prime minister of AJK.

While addressing the House Sardar Yaqoob congratulated Raja Farooq Haider on his dominating success. He said that he is ready to work with Raja Farooq Haider as a new prime minister of AJK and will cooperate with him.

Earlier, Yaqoob Khan had advised “President” Zulqarnain Khan against summoning the assembly session. Muslim Conference chief Ateeq Ahmed didn’t agree with this.

Yaqoob Khan had resigned last week to prevent what he termed “horse trading” in view of a threatened no-confidence motion.

Ahead of Thursday’s voting, security was beefed up in Muzaffarabad, the capital of AJK. There was snap checking at the entry points to the capital while special security passes were issued for entering the assembly secretariat.

AJK legislative assembly to elect new leader of the house today

Polls for new leader of the house of AJK legislative assembly will take place today while speaker assembly will perform the duty of election commissioner.

The special session of AJK legislative assembly will be held today to elect new prime minister through secret balloting. The counting of votes will be started at 1500 hrs.

Farooq Haider nominee of Muslim Conference enjoys the support of 29 members while Sardar Yaqoob Khan, nominee of alliance enjoys support of 19 members. Following the death of Sana Ullah Qadri his seat was declared vacant.

The prospects for victory of Farooq Haider , parliamentary leader of Muslim Conference are very bright The result of the polls would be announced soon after the counting.

Muslim conference earlier had backing from 27 members. 2 members of AJK legislative including Chaudhry Yousuf and Ali Shan Soni from Friends group met former AJK prime minister Sardar Sikandar Hayat and assured their full support to him.

Alliance nominee enjoys support of 19 members in the house including 7 members from PPP, 4 from PML, 2 from MQM and 6 members from Friends group.

It was a terrifying disaster, which will have ever lasting marks on my memory. I am a student at IIUI.I would easily have been a victim, but had a narrow escape as I left the cafeteria five minutes earlier with my cousin. Every time when I think about the dead and the injured students I feel like I was extremely lucky for not being one of them. We need support. One of us needs A (negative) blood. She is in PIMS. Twin blasts at IIUI have links with Waziristan: IG Islamabad

IG Islamabad Kaleem Imam has said important development has been made in connection with Tuesday’s twin suicide in the capital, saying terrorism incidents have link with Waziristan.

Talking to media men here on Wednesday, the IG Islamabad said that the investigation was underway and the report would be presented to the government soon.

Responding to a question, Syed Kaleem Imam said that no main arrest has been made, however several suspected people have been arrested in connection with the blast.

He said that the ages of both terrorists were from 18 to 20 years and their remains have been sent for DNA.

Commenting on security measures, the IG Islamabad said that a new security plan has been in placed and effectiveness of range of security has been enhanced as well as patrolling while rural areas of the capital are also being monitored.

Responding to a question, he said that it was difficult to stop suicide attacks, however, their intensity can be reduced, saying it was difficult to check pedestrian checking but measure were underway.

Vehicles of VVIPs to be checked at checkposts

Under the new directives of the Interior Ministry, the vehicles of VVIP including ministers would be checked at checkposts in the capital.

A private TV channel while quoting sources of the Interior Ministry said that under the new directives, the vehicles of ministers and their squad would be checked and the identification of the squad would also be asked by officials present at checkposts.

According to the channel, the police officers would also be stopped at check posts and in case, the officials do not know them, they would be allowed to go after verification of their identity cards.

The decision has been taken due to prevailing security situation of the country and VVIP movement in the capital, reported the channel.

IIU suicide bomber identified

The suicide bomber of the International Islamic University (IIU) has been identified.

Private TV Channel reported that investigation agencies have found a National Identity Card from the spot carrying name of Hafiz Khalil ur Rehman. However, rest of the information has been kept secret from the media and public so that it may not affect the further investigation process.

Security agencies also contact university administration for the details of the Hafiz Khalil ur Rehman but university administration expressed its total ignorance about the identity of Hafiz Khalid ur Rehman.

At this the security agencies feared that National Identity card may belong to suicide bomber. They took the NIC into their custody and said that it might prove helpful in investigation process.

The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) has been closed for four days to mourn Tuesday Bomb Blasts victims at the New Campus of the university. It was announced by IIUI spokesman Syed Muzammil Hussain, Deputy Director Public Relations.

Rector of the university Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik, President Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui, Vice Presidents Dr. Zafar Ishaq Ansari and Mrs. Parveen Qadir Agha, faculty members, students and staff have expressed their grief over tragic accident of Tuesday and paid tributes to those who lost their lives and those who were injured due to blasts They also participated in rescue operation.

They lauded heroic role of two IIUI Security Guards who laid their own lives and protected others’ lives. They also visited PIMS, NESCOM and KRL Hospitals to inquire about health of wounded persons. They assured them full assistance. In a statement, IIUI Rector Prof. Malik & President Dr. Siddiqui both have clarified that the university had taken all possible protective measures. The whole campus was protected by security guards and all visitors were thoroughly checked by metal detectors.

Five persons including a female student was killed while over 40 were injured in two suicide blasts at two campuses of the International Islamic University in Sector H-11.

According to media reports, the first blast occurred at Boy’s Section of Sharia Faculty of the university while Cafeteria of Girls Section rocked by another blast.

According to administration of PIMS, 1 dead body and 19 injured were brought in the hospital and most of injured were female students.

According to an eyewitness of the incident, the security guard stopped a suspected person at the main gate of the university before the blast but he was succeeded to reach at Girls Cafeteria of the University and blow himself up.

According to eyewitnesses, after some seconds, another suicide blast occurred in the Sharia Faculty of the university.

DIG Operations Bin Yamin has confirmed the death of 5 persons in blasts.

Talking to media, he said that a head and two legs of a suicide bomber have been found while the blast damaged the building partially.

SSP Tahir Alam has confirmed two blasts as suicide.

According to a private TV channel, the police have also arrested a suspected person in front of cafeteria of the university and according to sources he was assistant of suicide bomber and belongs to Sargodha.

According to eyewitnesses, the classes were underway at the time of blasts and foreigners most of them were Chinese students studying in these campuses. At the time of the blast, 3,000 to 4,000 students were present in the university. After the blast, the hostel of the university has been vacated.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Police Foundation, NESCOM and offices of other government departments are located near the new campus of the university.

The police and other law enforcement agencies have reached at the site after the blast and started the relief activities. The police cordoned off the area.

It is noted that after start of operation in South Waziristan, several private and government educational institutes were closed across the country including the capital.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani have strongly condemned the blasts and directed the authorities concerned to provide best medical treatment to the injured.
