UNHCR distributes Ramadan/Eid food packages to IDPs

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in collaboration with the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nehayan Charity Foundation,of the United Arab Emirates, is distributing special Ramadan/Eid food packages to internally displaced people (IDPs) in three camps of the North West Frontier Province.

Some 20,000 families will receive packages to be distributed in Jalala camp Mardan, Jalozai camp in Nowshera, and Kacha Ghari camp in Hayatabad, and to some of the most vulnerable families staying with host communities. Hundreds of food packages were distributed today (Wednesday) and the process will continue of the next 10 days.

Each 25 kg bag contains 5kg of rice, 3kg of sugar, 1kg of salt, 2kg ofdates, 1kg of spices, 3kg of juice powder, 4kg of bread flour, 3kg of Pakora flour, 2kg of milk powder and 1kg of tea.

UNHCR’s Deputy Representative Mr. Khassim Diagne said that this programme is part of the High Commissioner’s Ramadan solidarity initiative.

He explained that: “A majority of the world’s refugees are Muslims and live in Muslim countries therefore, we are distributing these special Ramadan/Eid packages as a gesture of solidarity during this Holy month of reflection and prayers.”

Mr. Diagne praised the generous donation from the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nehayan Charity Foundation which is supporting the food packages, and the purchase and distribution of non-food relief items to more than 120,000 displaced families.

“We value tremendously the UNHCR-Khalifa Foundation cooperation andconsider it as one of the most important partnerships we have embarked upon in the region in the last decade,” Diagne said.

The Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nehayan Foundation was established on 2 July 2007, based on a decree by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nehayan, President of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi.

The foundation enjoys an independent legal status and has the authority to implement charitable activities, provide assistance to the needy and provide educational assistance, provision of social, health and religious services. The foundation is based in Abu Dhabi and has a mandate to operate on a global capacity.
